A famous problem
This is it, the dreaded and most common E-code for the Xbox 360, the E74 error code. This error is essentially caused by a poor design and flaws in the manufacturing of the console. We are dealing with advanced stuff here but there are a few things a novice or beginner can do to fix the problem.
Replacing the motherboard
A fix to this issue is simply buying a replacement motherboard for your Xbox 360 console. Depending on what model and version you have, this could require some very light soldering. (Not all versions do). But buying a replacement will defiantly fix your issue.
The X-clamp fix
While I do feel the X-clamp fix has some merit, this should not be considered a permanent fix to an E74 error code. You can find kits that replace the X-clamps under the motherboard. This creates a tighter fit on the heatsinks which can bridge cold solder joints that cause this problem. This fix should be taken with a grain of salt. Some people use this method and run their Xbox 360 console for years, some only buy themselves a few months or even weeks. This should be considered temporary just in case. The biggest benefit is how simple it is to perform as well as being rather cheap to do it.
Getting advanced
For pros, you can fix this issue with a reflow, reball, or GPU replacement. This requires special equipment and expertise. The E74 error code on the Xbox 360 console usually means you have a cold or broken solder join under the GPU chip of the motherboard. performing this repair is a much more permanent and through plan to fix your problem. You can also find professionals that offer this service, but be prepared to spend some money to do so.
