E66 Xbox 360 error code | Tinker Mods

What's up with the E66?

This error code originates from your disc drive. While the error itself is triggered because the kernel could not create a DVD drive instance, this can actually be caused by multiple problems. Some of these problems have nothing to do with the drive by itself.

Update or drive PCB problem

The E66 Xbox 360 error code can be caused by the circuit board inside the drive itself. Sometimes a firmware update can brick the drive if it wasn't completed correctly. In addition, some of the components can simply go bad. However, replacing the disc drive PCB is not a simple task. This board is matched, or married, to the motherboard. Due to this buying a replacement would require you to reprogram and flash it. Due to this, you might simply be better off buying a working motherboard set with a matched drive board.

Bad sata cables

Let's hope the Sata cables are your problem here. Simply buying a replacement set of drive cables could fix this problem. Shorted wires or damaged connectors can cause bad communication with the drive. This can easily throw the E66 error code on your Xbox 360 if this happens. Try replacing the cables and see if your problem is solved.

Faulty Southbridge

The southbridge is a chip on your motherboard that handles a lot of communication between components. Hence where the name bridge comes from. If this chip has a cold solder joint or has gone faulty you can get the E66 error code. Since most people do not have the equipment to perform a reball, reflow, or replacement on this chip it will be easier for most to replace the entire motherboard.
