E35 error code diagnosis

An Xbox 360 with the E35 error code could be one of the easier problems to deal with when it comes to the Xbox 360 E-codes. Read on to find out what is going on and what you can do about it

GPU overheating

In simple terms, the E35 error on your Xbox 360 console is caused by the GPU chip temperature reaching the max threshold. This causes the chip to function improperly and force the E35 error to populate. To address this issue, you need to ask yourself a few questions as well as troubleshoot some common problems that could cause the GPU to get so hot.

Troubleshooting

First let's go through what you should check. Open your console by removing the top shell piece and turn the console on. Check your rear exhaust fan for proper function. Typically if the fan isn't running you would get two red rings, not one with the E35 error. Since the Xbox 360 uses a dual bladed fan, you could also have one fan functioning and one that doesn't. Check the rear of your console and make sure both fans are running and that the fan isn't extremely caked up with dirt and dust. If you do find something wrong, clean the fan. You can buy an OEM replacement for pretty cheap online as well.

Heatsinks and compound

Have you recently messed with the heatsinks and heatsink compound? If so you may want to check both. If you find any damaged or bent metal on the heatsink of the GPU, then the E35 error could be due to the GPU having a damaged heatsink. Check the thermal compound next. Is there a smooth even layer covering the chip? Did you forget to put new heatsink compound on it? If so you can address those problems and fix your issue. Replacing the stock heatsink compound may also help. If all else fails, buy a replacement heatsink for the GPU. There could be hard to see damage preventing proper heat dissipation.
